Hello everyone!

Winter has arrived with a vengeance! We’ve had a busy week here at the store with a whole lot of deliveries arriving. Items that had been out of stock for a while are back and we have plenty of all your favorites.

Sinfully Deelicious Brittles:

Sinfully back in stock. We have a Dragon’s Den contestant in the store that is hard to turn down. This exceptional brittle is fantastically sweet and salty and is sure to bring a smile to the face of any sweet tooth on your Christmas list.

Uncle Bob’s Pop Corn:

Grown by the Ontario Popping Corn Company, Uncle Bob’s popcorn on the cob makes a great gift. These uniquely colored cobs of pop corn are meant to be placed in a small brown paper bag (included in the package) and microwaved for three minutes to produce a colorful and interesting looking snack. Great as stocking stuffers!

Dalew Produce:

Thanks to Dave and Chantal Lewington for bringing in another great batch of winter produce. They brought in lots of fantastic carrots that are perfect for winter storage. The Lewingtons also brought cabbages and we have lots of beets.

Dalew Farms are making gift certificates that are redeemable at their farm gate store. If you would like to give your friends or family one for Christmas they can make them for any cash value you wish to purchase and they will be redeemable for any products they sell. If you would like to order one the Lewingtons can make it to give to you Wednesday evening, if not you can also order it by mail. They just need the following info:

Name of person you are giving to:

$ Amount you would like to purchase:

You can pay them Wednesday evening when they are dropping off an order to the store or send your cheque by mail to:

Dalew Farms

10781 Hwy 64

Lavigne On

P0H 1R0

Golden Beef:

Today we received a large order of beef from the Temiskaming and Cochrane area. There are lots of great roasts, steaks and ground of this premium grass fed beef. Don’t forget to stock up for Holiday parties!

Graywalk Buffalo Ranch:

Tom and Mary have brought us lots of ribs, roasts and ground. Their ultra lean, high protein, grass fed and hormone free bison is a pleasure to prepare and eat. Bison ribs braised make a unique dinner idea.

Ontario Natural Foods Cooperative:

Due to bad weather the ONFC order did not arrive on schedule and last weekend we were without glass jar yogurt and keifer as well as glass bottle whipping cream and fresh goat’s cheese. All of these products have now arrived! If you missed out on your favorite organic products this weekend come on down.

Burt’s Pork:

Max Burt is going to be bringing us a holiday-sized order of Pork from Manitoulin Island on Thursday. Roasts, hams and ground pork are all going to be in stock. Max is well known in the area for producing premium quality grass fed meat at prices that are comparable to the grocery store. Pick up a roast and taste the difference grass feeding makes in the flavor of meat.

Plain Jane Soap:

Plain Jane Soap comes in many delightful scents from Lavender to Oat & Honey and Apple Cider. A great gifts for the person who has everything. Plain Jane products are handmade, vegetarian/vegan, all natural and environmentally friendly soap, moisturizing bars and lip balms.

Thanks, and see you at the Co-op!

Hello everyone!

At Eat Local Sudbury we’re always on the lookout for new, local products to bring to you.  You may remember that a while back we received a delivery of dried beans (kidney, navy, soy, etc) from Pristine Gourmet, sold in 5 lb bags for $12.50 each.  We’ve since decided to offer the beans in another way: we’ve installed bins, Bulk Barn-style, filled with different kinds of beans.  The beans will be sold in baggies, by weight.  Feel free to bring your own baggie, and we will be providing them here as well.  Hopefully this gives more people the chance to enjoy the delicious, healthy goodness of this product.

Coming soon: bulk-style soya and canola oil!  Stayed tuned for more info.

If the recent cold snap and snow have got you down, why not stay home and stay warm inside and out with this recipe for Slow Cooker Chili from our Simply In Season cookbook:

Slow Cooker Chili

1 lb / 500 g ground beef or bison

1 onion, chopped

1 to 2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup green peppers, chopped

1 cup celery, chopped (optional)

4 cups cooked kidney beans

4 cups tomatoes, chopped

1 to 2 tbsp chilli powder

1 tbsp honey

1 tsp salt

1 cup corn (optional)

1 cup mushrooms, chopped (optional)

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)

Brown the meat in a large frying pan.  Add the onion, garlic, green peppers, and celery (if you’re using it) to the pan, and sauté for 3 to 5 minutes.  Place in slow cooker.  Add the rest of your ingredients (except mushrooms, if you’re using them), and cook on high for 15 minutes, then on low for 8 to 10 hours.  Add the mushrooms, if desired, during the last hour.  Serve, and enjoy!

Thanks, and see you at the Co-op!

Hello everyone!

Lately we’ve been getting some questions from our customers about how we choose the products we sell in the store.  So, we decided to share our Product Policy with you, so that you can get a better idea of how our Co-op works.  You can find the complete policy attached to this e-flyer, but basically what happens is this: a producer will contact us with a product he or she wants to sell through our Co-op.  The staff at the Co-op take down the producer’s information, and pass it along to our Products Committee, who evaluate the product based on the 5 criteria listed in the policy (whether the product is ecologically produced, whether it’s local, organic, Ontario-grown, or a combination of these factors).  The Committee votes on whether or not to carry to product, and the staff contacts the producer to let him or her know the outcome.  For more information on this process, if you’d like to get involved, or if you have a product you’d like to suggest, please reply to this e-mail with comments or questions.

Read on to find out what’s going on with the Eat Local Store and our friends in the upcoming weeks!

Eat Local Sudbury’s One Year Anniversary

As we mentioned in last week’s e-flyer, this Saturday marks one year since the Eat Local Sudbury Co-op Store first opened its doors.  Come join us in this Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm – we’ll have free samples ready for anyone looking to celebrate!

Anderson Farm Museum Christmas Tree Lighting

Ho, ho, ho, ‘tis the season!  If you’re looking for some family-friendly fun for the upcoming holidays, check out the Anderson Farm Museum Christmas Tree Lighting event!  Located at 156 Main Street in Lively, the Anderson Farm Museum is a carefully restored turn-of-the-century dairy farm.  On December 12th, from 6 to 8 pm, the folks at the Farm will be holding an event that will include hot chocolate, vintage toys, Christmas crafts, horse-drawn wagon rides, carolling, outdoor winter fun, a visit from Santa, and the lighting of the tree at 7 pm.  For more information, check out the flyer, attached.

Perogy Princess Café

Our good friend Mary Bedkowski, of Perogy Princess fame, has decided to take her venture to the next level by opening a café located at 66 Elm Street in downtown Sudbury (near KICX FM radio station).  The café is open from 9 to 5, Monday to Friday, so if you’re walking around downtown this winter and are craving a hot, home-cooked meal, check out the Perogy Princess Café.  Menu items include a variety of perogies, cabbage rolls, kabobs, soups, sausage-on-a-bun, sandwiches, and a variety of pastries to finish the meal off right.  For more information, call Mary at 586-3008.

Vigil for Survival

As the expiration date for the Kyoto Protocol draws near, Sudburians are banding together to show the politicians and negotiators in Copenhagen that we can build a better world out of the chaos of the climate crisis.  A demonstration will be held on Friday, December 11th, from 4:30 – 5:30 pm at the Bridge of Nations.  The organizers ask that you bring your own candle, as well as one to share.  Let the world know we are too connected to fail!  For more information on the Vigil for Survival, please see the poster, attached.

Thanks, and see you at the Co-op!
