Dispelling the Myth

When going into the grocery store shopping and comparing prices, we have to be sure to compare apples to apples (to use a well-known idiom).  I found that the free range, pasture raised, hormone free ground beef was $14.31/kg at our large National competitor.  Ours retails for only $4.83/lb which would only equal $10.63kg!  Not only does this price beat our competitors by leaps and bounds but ours is grown within 150 miles radius of our home!  Shopping locally can help the environment and our budget!

Correction

Last week’s eflyer (Wednesday December 7th) stated that Dalew Farms pork products would be ready for sale by the 8th of December.  Correct date will be the 22nd of December.  Sorry about the inconvenience.

Pan-Fried Lamb Steak (for two)

Ingredients:

·         2 Pasture Hill lamb leg steaks

·         2 tablespoons of dried ONFC savoury seasoning

·         2 cloves of Gerber garlic

·         2 tablespoons of olive oil

·         Sea salt and freshly ground pepper (to taste)

Directions:

·         Crush garlic in a mortar and pestle and add it savoury seasoning and salt and pepper to taste.  Mix garlic and herb mixture into a container suitable for marinating and then mix in oil olive.

·         Place thawed lamb leg steaks in this marinade and let sit for at least 10 minutes or up to ½ hour.

·         Use a preheated cast iron frying pan on medium heat to fry the marinated lamb leg steaks, 5 minutes on each side until they are golden brown.  This should cook them medium well done.  If you enjoy lamb a little rare, cook for 4 minutes each side.

Serve with mustard roasted purple potatoes and steamed cabbage.  Recipe adapted from en.christinesrecipes.com.

Fun Food Fact of the Week!

Oregano was first used by the Greeks. In their mythology, Aphrodite the Goddess of Love invented the spice in order to make men’s life happier. The word "oregano" is actually derived from the Greek phrase, "joy of the mountains". Newly married couples were often crowned with wreaths of it to promote happiness in their union. Get your bit of organic happiness with some Ontario Natural Food Co-op oregano today! J
